About us
Capitolium Art is based in Brescia, between Via Carlo Cattaneo and Piazza Tebaldo Brusato, in the historic Palazzo Cigola Fenaroli Valotti, one of the city’s most important and well-known buildings.
The two facades clearly reveal the different eras: the sixteenth-century facade in Via Cattaneo, with an off-centre portal, featuring two imposing atlases; the seventeenth-century facade overlooking Piazza Tebaldo Brusato.
As a whole, however, the building is harmonious in volume and for the continuity of the sixteenth-century structures even in the seventeenth-century part.
Entering from Via Carlo Cattaneo, there is an elegant portico leading to a courtyard that dates back to the dawn of the sixteenth century - perhaps even to the end of the fifteenth century - with three sides with four very elegant bays between tall pillars.
The portico leads to the stairs up to the Gallery, housed a closed loggia, with a wooden ceiling carved with squares, rosettes and cornices: all in the style of the sixteenth century Brescia.
The coffered wooden ceiling in the adjoining hall is a rare treasure in Brescia, densely decorated with a variety of patterns: a decidedly unusual style that is not found in other residences in the city, which hints towards Fausto Lechi or work by of artisans and artists who came from outside the city.
The dining room is airy, decorated with three landscape paintings, enclosed by false pilasters, depicting - with artistic licence - three Cigola family holiday destinations in the province of Brescia.
Other rooms display finely carved, coffered ceilings featuring decorations and frescoes by famous artists, including Sante Cattaneo and Carlo Frigerio.
Built, as mentioned, by the Counts Cigola of Muslone in the 16th and 17th centuries, when the family died out, the grandiose building passed to the aristocratic Fenaroli family. Tradition has it that the Cigola family took in and cared for Pierre du Terrail, seigneur de Bayard, a knight without blemish or fear, wounded during the Sack of Brescia in 1512.
