Bonacina 1889 Biography

Bonacina 1889 was born in 2015 from the merger of the two companies Vittorio Bonacina and Pierantonio Bonacina. Since 2017, Bonacina 1889 has begun to transform past designs made of natural materials into new pieces woven in synthetic materials specifically for the outdoors. The hand-working techniques of rush and wicker remain unchanged, constituting a unique example in the Italian and international panorama. The brand collaborates with important contemporary architecture and interior studios such as Peter Marino, Jacques Grange and Daniel Romualdez. In 1889, in Lurago d'Erba, Giovanni and Pietro Bonacina founded the Fratelli Bonacina company, drawing inspiration from the local tradition of basket making and applying the rush and wicker weaving technique to the world of furniture. Over the years the two brothers took different paths and created the two companies, reunited today after years apart. When, in 1951, Franco Albini received the commission to design two armchairs, the architect undoubtedly turned to Vittorio Bonacina, who had acquired great experience alongside his father. The presentation of the revolutionary “Margherita” at the IX Triennale – awarded with the gold medal – was a historic moment for the world of design and the beginning of a new life for the company, the first step towards a fruitful friendship with great designers. A special place is reserved for famous pieces such as the “Ball”, the “Daisy” and the “Gala” in museums such as the MOMA in New York. The Museum of Art in Philadelphia, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal, the Vitra Design Museum in Weil Am Rhein and the Design Museum at the Triennale in Milan.
