Giovanni Canu began his artistic career in 1960 in Nuoro, where Raffaello Marchi sensed his potential and became his mentor. In the 1960s he obtained his artistic maturity in Turin and attended the Accademia Albertina. He then graduated from the Brera Academy in sculpture, a discipline that will also be predominant and tangible in three-dimensional and material paintings. in the 70s in Milan, where he lives and works, works recalling the primary forms of the Neolithic populations of Nuragic Sardinia were created. Soon in the Milanese cultural and artistic environment he successfully competed with minimalism to which he adhered in full harmony. In the 1980s he worked on Land Art, interfacing iron, steel and concrete in the "Sculpture Path" (work created and exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Milan under the direction of E. Arslan) creating solid and powerful forms that refer to ancestral archetypes, masculine and feminine. In the 90s he proposed a return to the origins of his Sardinian world, to explore the primary source of life, the theme of fertility and cosmic conjunction. Since 2000 he has tackled other materials: hard such as granite and basalt for works of architecture, furniture, design or mouldable such as ceramic and clay.
