(Comiso, 23 October 1915 – Milan, 13 June 1997). Italian painter, sculptor, architect, writer and set designer. His first official exhibition, which included the works Islands of statues and Cities of statues and which allowed him to arouse much interest among critics and to make contacts with artistic and cultural institutions worldwide, was held in 1949 at the Borromini Gallery in Milan ; here a work by the painter was purchased both by the director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Alfred H. Barr Jr., to exhibit it in his own museum, and by the Jucker collection in Milan. The following year, in 1950, he was invited by the Venice Biennale to exhibit the triptych Island of Statues, which earned him a page in the American magazine Life.
