Giandante X Biography
Giandante He signed his works as Giandante, a modification of "eternal wayfarer" as he liked to be called. Son of a textile industrialist, a shy and solitary person, at the age of sixteen he abandoned his family to embark on his life as a wandering artist. Rather eclectic, he graduated in architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna at the age of 19, a student of Edoardo Collamarini. Having dedicated himself to teaching (he was the youngest architecture teacher in Italy), two years later he obtained a degree in philosophy. He was essentially a painter, illustrator and sculptor; he was also a poet and philosopher. Very active in the Milanese art scene, he shared ideas and exhibitions with the great artists of the time, such as Carlo Carrà, Aligi Sassu, Mario Sironi, Renato Birolli, Bruno Munari and Giacomo Manzù. At the age of twenty he presented his works in various exhibitions, achieving considerable success with the public and critics. He exhibited at the first Monza Biennials and in the most important galleries in Milan. Anarchist, he actively participated in the Spanish Civil War and was later taken prisoner in France.
