Piero Giunni Biography

Piero Giunni (1912 - 2000) was born in Villa Cortese (Milan) in 1912; he studied at the Brera and Venice Academy. His presence in the panorama of contemporary Italian art takes on importance with his participation in the most important national events including the Rome Quadrennials of 1951 and 1959 and the Venice Biennials of 1956 (where he won the prize "for a young artist") and of 1958. In the 1950s, in Paris, he discovered informal art and evolved towards non-figurative painting. In 1957 he won a purchase prize at the fifth edition of the Spoleto prize. In 1962 the Galleria del Milione in Milan dedicated a solo exhibition to him. Since 1964 he has almost always painted in the countryside, at a mill near Legnano where he dedicated himself to the representation of the Po Valley landscape and still life. Among the numerous personal exhibitions in various Italian cities we remember: the first at the Galleria Annunciata in Milan in 1949, at the Bergamini (from l970 to l979), at the Ponte Rosso (1979, '81, '85, '37, '95), to Permanente in 1990; also in Switzerland at the Matasci in Tenero (l980) and at the Colomba in Lugano (l986, '88). Several works by Giunni appear in the collections of the Cariplo Foundation. Giunni passed away in Bondone (TN) in August 2000.
