Lumi Biography
Lumi (1944 - ) was born in 1944 with the mission of designing and creating exclusive lighting fixtures of great class and quality, intended for an attentive public with extremely refined tastes. The company chooses the best raw materials with skilful combinations essential to enhance each project produced, and the processes are completely manual, with fine finishes taken care of piece by piece, with meticulous accuracy. Several great designers work for the company, one of them being the Italian lighting designer Oscar Torlasco, who worked for most of his career for Lumi. Particularly active during the 1950s and 1960s, Torlasco's lighting designs, which include sconces, floor lamps, chandeliers and table lamps, several featured in our catalog, often use industrial chrome steel along with luxury materials such as marble , crystal and brass. His eclectic designs range from industrial and Space Age styles, to Italian Art Deco, and the use of optical glass lenses is considered Torlasco's hallmark. In 1959, he was awarded a Compasso d'Oro for his lamppost Genova 4053 (1959). Another well-known lamp also designed for lumi in 1955 is the 577 model, a brass and metal table lamp, with adjustable and limited light, equipped with an optical lens. The diameter of the light beam is adjusted by moving the position of the bulb forward or backward. Other big names in Italian design worked for Lumi in those years, among the most famous we remember Nanda Vigo and Gio Ponti. Among the most valuable lamps, the 575 and 576 models, the luminous brass paintings designed by Gio Ponti.
