Marino Marini Biography

(Pistoia, 27 February 1901 – Viareggio, 6 August 1980). Born in Pistoia, she has a twin sister, Egle, a painter and poet who would become the greatest lyrical interpreter of her art. In 1917 he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, attending the painting courses of Galileo Chini and the sculpture courses held by Domenico Trentacoste. In 1919 he went to Paris for the first time where he came into contact with the new trends in the art world. In 1940 he left Monza to become a professor at the sculpture faculty of the Turin Academy and the following year he became holder of the chair of sculpture at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. During the war he took refuge in Tenero[1], near Locarno (his wife's hometown), where he continued to work. He often went to Zurich and Basel, continuing to exhibit until 1945. Only in 1948 did he return to Milan where he resumed teaching. Peggy Guggenheim purchased one of her Knights, The Angel of the City, and installed it in Venice in front of her museum, where it still stands today. The following years saw her progressively free herself from defined forms and a growth in her satisfaction with elegant shapes and volumes and stylized. His friendship with the sculptor Henry Moore is significant in this sense. At the same time his worldwide fame grew: he exhibited in all the most important museums and received continuous recognition throughout the fifties, sixties and seventies. He died in Viareggio at the age of seventy-nine.
