Gaetano Memmo was born in Chieti where he lives. He completed his artistic studies and taught at the State Art Institute of Chieti for thirty-one years in the painting section. His exhibition activity began immediately after the war (his first participation in a collective exhibition in Chieti dates back to 1948, while his first solo exhibition in his city dates back to 1954). Since those years he has been present at highly prestigious art exhibitions such as the Michetti, Vasto, Avezzano, Penne and Sulmona Awards. He also worked in Tommaso Cascella's studio, collaborating among other things on the creation of the grandiose ceramic panel located in the Municipal Palace of Chieti. In 1970 he was invited to the trade union exhibition which took place at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, while in 1978 and '79 he exhibited for the first time in America in New York and San Francisco respectively. In 1986 he was invited to the biennial of sacred art in Pescara and the following year Enrico Crispolti included him in the L'Aquila exhibition Alternative Attuali. Again in '87 and then in '89 he was present with his solo show at the Expo Arte in Bari. In 1986 a monograph on his pictorial work was published on behalf of the Galleria Margutta in Pescara with a critical text by Marcello Venturoli. In 1990, the Eliseo publishing house in Rome published a second monograph with a critical text by Leo Strozzieri. Also in 1990, the publisher Ribichini printed a precious box set in one hundred copies with ten etchings by Memmo and poems by Leo Strozzieri. In 1990 the city of Vasto dedicated an anthology to him at Palazzo d'Avalos. In 1991 he exhibited at the "Pirra" Gallery in Turin and was invited to the Michetti Awards of Francavilla al Mare in Sulmona and at Linea di Ricerca in Pescara. In 1991 he was present at the Biennial of Contemporary Art in Torre S. Patrizio. In '97 a monograph was published by the Ghelfi publisher of Verona with texts by Venturoli, Civello and Strozzieri.
