Henry Moore Biography

(30 July 1898 – 31 August 1986). Son of a mining engineer, born in Yorkshire, in the town of Castleford, Moore became famous for his large-scale abstract bronze works and his square marble sculptures. During the bombings of the Second World War by the Germans, Moore, like many of his fellow Londoners, used to take refuge in tube stations. From here he drew inspiration for many of his works that made him famous. His style influenced by primitive and tribal art breaks with traditional classical canons. Henry Moore loved to draw inspiration from the human body. His statues represent primitive and deformed bodies, often with long limbs unnaturally extended but dynamic in the play of movements. They often depict women, a symbol of fertility, or supine figures that underline how man belongs to nature. This theme was interpreted as a sign of hope and faith in humanity, a positive message that contributed to the success the artist enjoyed after the Second World War. One of his works is located in Prato in Piazza San Marco, and it is now one of the symbols of the city.
