Giò Pomodoro (Orciano di Pesaro 1930 - Milan 2002) Italian sculptor. He is considered one of the most important abstract sculptors on the international scene of the 20th century. Brother of the well-known sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro, from experiences of signs and automatic writing he moved on to works in welded iron and negatives on earth, then to surfaces in tension. He arrived at the "cycle of matter, void and geometry" (ca. 1958 – 1972) with Tensioned Surfaces, Folle and then transforming tensions into torsions with Suns, Arcs and Spirals. He favored large floating areas in bronze and large blocks carved in marble or rigidly squared in stone. In these works, empty spaces usually open up and let the sunlight break in. The sun is often the subject of his works, to which the author's precise ideological meanings are linked. From 1964-65 were the first studies on load-bearing structures, linked to the idea of the spiral as the origin of the action of stretching. At the same time he began to work on stone and marble, reaching the cycles of works of the early seventies characterized by great expressive power. He has repeatedly participated in numerous international exhibitions and Venice Biennials since the 1950s.
