Rossi Ilario (Bologna, 1911-1994) Ilario Rossi was a painter, active in Bologna. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna in 1933 and was inspired throughout his artistic career by the paintings of Giorgio Morandi. The landscapes, still lifes and figures are, however, interpreted by the artist through an intimate vein, far from Morandi's rigor. He participated in the Venice Biennials starting from 1936 and in the Rome Quadrennials from 1939, and was one of the founders of the Galleria Cronache in the post-war period. In the 1950s Rossi approached a form of abstraction, close to the Informal. In 1964 he held a solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale, where he showed his renewed interest in the human figure. In 1965 he obtained the chair of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, and then became its director in 1970. In the last years of his work the artist developed some themes dear to him, maintaining the usual composition and the harmonious balance of colours, characterized by unnatural shades.
