Brian Wood Biography
Brian Wood was born in 1948 in Canada. He studied mathematics, physics and literature at the University of Saskatchewan, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1969. After a few years of traveling and working in Europe, during which he exhibited some of his work in London, he moved to New York City where he completed his Master of Arts in Studio Art at Hunter College in 1975.
Initially a painter, Wood also works in photography, drawing and multimedia. He has exhibited his work in Canada, the United States, the Czech Republic, Italy, France and England, in both solo and group exhibitions. His first solo photography exhibition was organized in 1979 at the Galerie Marielle Mailhot in Montreal, Canada. The Museum of Modern Art in New York has played an important role in displaying Wood's works, some of which have been part of the museum's collection since the 1970s and have often been featured in its exhibitions and books.
Wood's works are in many major collections, including the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), the Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon), the Brooklyn Museum (New York), the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography (Ottawa), the Concordia Art Gallery (Montreal), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Museum of Decorative Arts (Prague, Czech Republic), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the New York Public Library and the Tampa Museum of Art.
