The son of an Orthodox rabbi he had his first artistic training at the Bezalel school in Jerusalem in 1946. In 1950 Agam moved to Zurich to study at the Bauhaus Johannes Itten at the Kunstgewerbeschule. In 1951, Agam moved to Paris, where he met the surrealist artists who were the first to discover and encourage him. In 1953 he held his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Craven in Paris, with kinetic and transformable paintings that invite the viewer to participate. In 1955 he established himself as one of the pioneers of kinetic art at the "Le Mouvement" exhibition at the Galerie Denise René alongside artists such as Jesús Rafael Soto, Alexander Calder or Jean Tinguely, becoming one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century.
Today he lives and works in Paris.
