LEOPOLDO TORRES AGUERO (La Rioja, Argentina, 1924- Paris, 1995) Raised in La Rioja before moving to Buenos Aires and then in 1941 to Paris, where he was a student of Candido Portinari. He returned to Buenos Aires in 1952 where he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts, frequenting the group he had formed with Raul Soldi, Batlle Planas and Osvaldo Svanascini. In 1953 he painted the mural Christ on the Mount of Olives in the Catholic Church of Olives. He lived in Japan between 1959 and 1962, a stay that influenced his art and style towards abstraction and then Op Art. He was the Argentine ambassador to France from 1989 to UNESCO in 1994, a position which he held at the time of his death. He won the Palanza Prize in 1989 and the Order of Arts and Letters from the French government. The critic Rafael Squirm wrote an essay on his work.
