Mariotto Albertinelli Biography
Mariotto Albertinelli was a famous Italian painter born in Florence on 13 October 1474 and died in the same place on 5 November 1515.
He worked in his father's goldsmith's shop until the age of twenty and then devoted himself exclusively to painting. He trained in the workshop of Cosimo Rosselli, together with Piero di Cosimo and Baccio della Porta with whom he formed a strong friendship.
Mariotto worked for Alfonsina Orsini, mother of Lorenzo de' Medici, Duke of Urbino, also dedicating a portrait to her. However, in 1494, when the Medici were banished from Florence, he decided to return to work with Baccio della Porta. They worked together on the Annunciation of 1497 for the Volterra Cathedral and the Holy Family. The works attributed to Mariotto include the triptychs of the Virgin and Child, Angels and Saints in the Museum of Fine Arts of Chartres and the Virgin and Child and Saints Catherine of Alexandria and Barbara in the Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan.
Mariotto worked at the Certosa di Firenze, for which he frescoed the Chapter House with a Crucifixion with the Madonna, Saint Mary Magdalene and Angels.
Starting in 1506, he worked for the Congregation of San Zanobi at the Annunciation, which only ended in 1510 and which is now preserved in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence. Mariotto enriched the liveliness of the painting thanks to the intensity of the chiaroscuro, the colors and the use of light.
