Henry Thomas Alken (London 1785 – London 1851)
He was an English painter and engraver, famous above all for his caricatures and illustrations of sporting subjects. His most productive period of drawing and painting occurred between 1816 and 1831.
Henry studied with his father and then with the miniaturist John Thomas Barber Beaumont, also known as J.T. Barber. In 1801, he sent a miniature portrait of Miss Gubbins to the Royal Academy Exhibition.
Among the most famous series of engravings are: “The National Sports of Great Britain” (1821), “The life of a Sportsman” (1842). He is also known for having illustrated the novella “Jorrock's Jaunts and Jollities” (1843 ). In 1849 he wrote and published a book on the art and practice of etching. The rare oil paintings have hunting subjects, a very popular subject in England at the time.
