Sergio Altieri Biography

Sergio Altieri was born in 1930 in Capriva del Friuli, where he spent most of his life. In 1949, together with Ignazio Doliach, he attended the studio of the painter Gigi Castellani and joined the neorealist movement. He took part in the meetings of the Artists' Union in Udine, where he met important personalities such as Giuseppe Zigaina and Pier Paolo Pasolini. Altieri later became one of the founders of the International Visual Art Group “2xGO” together with artists from Gorizia and Nova Gorica, a Yugoslav city at the time. The artist chooses to live and work in solitude in his hometown, away from the distractions of modern life. Altieri is considered one of the few artists who prefer tranquility and silence, as invaluable assets for artistic creation. The artist is often associated with the "middle generation" of the 1940s due to his stylistic quality such as the use of color, composition and image quality. His work is characterized by figurative hints transformed into spots and pictorial nuclei illuminated by an intense internal light. Altieri's images seem to have their own luminous dimension, which is centered on a point on the surface modulated on a key tone. His painting seems to take on the value and meaning of an apparition, giving the sense of a moment, of a rapid vibration of colored lights in an infinite space. Altieri has exhibited his works in numerous collective and personal exhibitions in Italy and abroad, with particular interest in the local and Balkan world. Loneliness made this artist a "visionary" on the limits of a mysterious domain but how can an artist of our time be, who has replaced ecstasy with culture.
