Jacopo Amigoni Biography

AMIGONI JACOPO (1682 – Madrid, 1752) Shows an education in the circle of Luca Giordano, with influences from Francesco Solimena and the Roman school. After a stay in Bavaria, he dedicated himself to the creation of frescoes which show how the artist was one of the first followers of the Venetian Rococo, which, not coincidentally, is also called the "Amigoni style" in Germany. In late 1747 he settled in Madrid where, called by Ferdinand VI and Maria Barbara of Braganza, he became court painter and director of the Royal Academy of San Fernando, also working in Aranjuez, Segovia and for tapestry manufacturers. With Amigoni's works, European Arcadian painting reaches its apogee: both in the decorations and in his canvases he shows lightness and grace, a luminous elegance of mellow and cold colors spread with broad brushstrokes. His compositional clarity places him among the most important representatives of Arcadian and Rococo pictorial culture.
