JAMES ANDERSON (Cumbria, 1813 – Rome, 1877) He was an English painter and photographer, who settled in Rome in 1838. After a period of studying watercolor painting in Paris, in 1838 he arrived in Rome, where he imagined building a career as a maker of watercolors and where he began to work with the new photographic technique, creating calotypes. In Rome he created his own photographic house, which lasted from 1851 to 1963. The documentary quality of the photographic images, obviously more faithful to the truth than the engravings, was meanwhile conquering the market of travellers, scholars and antiquities enthusiasts, especially foreigners: Anderson he soon realized and intensified his work in this field. In 1851, he then entrusted the distribution of his works to the Spithöve bookshop, and in 1859 he published his first and only catalogue, with a summary description of 667 photographs.
