Richard Ansdell (1815-1885) was an eminent English artist of the Victorian era.
Noted for his portraits of animals (such as "Lytham Sandhills") and field sports (such as "Winter Shooting"), he also does occasional portraits and historical subjects ("The Fight for the Standard" depicting the capture of the French flag) .
In 1870 he was elected Royal Academician. His first works exhibited at the Royal Academy were "Grouse Shooting" and "A Galloway Farm". Read the full biography

In 1870 he was elected Royal Academician. His first works exhibited at the Royal Academy were "Grouse Shooting" and "A Galloway Farm". In 1846 he exhibited his famous work "The Stag at Bay". The following year its sister work, "The Combat" was exhibited
The largest public collections of Ansdell's paintings in Britain are at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, the Lytham St Annes Art Collection and the Harris Museum in Preston.
