Paolo Assenza Biography
Paolo Assenza is an artist born in 1974 in Rome, where he lives and works. He graduated in scenography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, where he studied under the guidance of Alberto Boatto and other artists of the Roman scene of the 90s such as Bruno Aller, Maurizio Mochetti (of whom he was assistant), the exponents of the historic Gruppo Uno (Achille Pace, Nato Frascà, Ninì Santoro, Nicola Carrino), and of the Roman School of Via degli Ausoni in San Lorenzo. His artistic work ranges from painting to installation to video, constantly experimenting between various mediums, but maintaining a strong connection with painting. He has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions and his works are present in public and private collections. In 2014 he was one of the founders of SpazioY, an experimental and independent place for Contemporary Art in the Roman suburbs, where he organized numerous exhibitions. On the occasion of the Manifesta 12 Biennial, he opened a new headquarters in Palermo, an experience that he considers as an artistic action in which the research exhibition place is intended as a space for artistic/political/social comparison, a cultural project necessary to re -formulate a contemporary experience similar to the historical avant-gardes. Assenza was selected among the 20 most representative independent companies present on the national territory. He has held numerous solo exhibitions including "Appunti di Viaggio" curated by Cristina Costanzo (2019, Turin) and "#1 Crypt of the Church of S. Maria del Piliere" curated by Cristina Costanzo (2019, Palermo); and has participated in group exhibitions such as "Found a Mentalism II" curated by Andrea Hilger and Antka Hofmann (2018, Valletta), "Monitor#1" curated by Fabrizio Pizzuto (2018, Rome) and "Re_Form 11th Biennale di Ostrale" curated by Andrea Hilger and Oliver Kratz (2017, Dresden) and "Asyndeton - Autumn Equinox" at Castello di Rivara.
