Franco Assetto Biography

The eclectic and multifaceted painter, sculptor and artist, Franco Assetto was born in Turin in 1911. He graduated in pharmacy and with the outbreak of the Second World War he was called up to arms with the rank of captain of the Bersaglieri. After the war he took his leave and began his artistic activity and in 1950 he made his debut with a solo show at the Galleria il Naviglio in Milan. Considered one of the precursors of Italian Pop Art, at the beginning of the 1950s he met Franco Garelli who invited him to stay in Albisola to broaden his artistic experience. In 1953 he was at the "La Bussola" Gallery with "La Mostra del Pane". Intrigued by the ceramic material, he collaborated for a certain period of time with the factories for the production of artistic ceramics in Albisola "MGA" owned by the Mazzotti family and for the "Ce .As" in Albissola Marina, decorating his ceramic works with a clear surreal imprint. In 1969 he created "moving" paintings using water and giving life to three-dimensional works defined as "water sculptures". In the Seventies he moved to the United States where, in his studio in Los Angeles, in addition to other works, he created some ceramic fountains for UCLA University He died in his hometown in 1991.
