Edmondo Bacci Biography

Edmondo Bacci was born in Venice on 21 July 1913. From 1932 to 1937 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, with Ettore Tito and Virgilio Guidi. In 1945 he held his first solo exhibition at the Galleria del Cavallino in Venice; in 1948 he participated for the first time in the Venice Biennale. He exhibited in 1951 at the first Genoa Biennale, and in 1953 in Venice at an exhibition of the Movimento spatial group, founded by Lucio Fontana; since then he has been regularly present at Spatialism exhibitions, including “Espacialismo”, in 1956, at the Galeria Bonino in Buenos Aires. Towards the mid-1950s Peggy Guggenheim became fascinated by his painting and became an active supporter. Bacci held an important solo exhibition at the Galleria del Cavallino in 1955 and, the following year, his first solo exhibition in the United States, at the Seventy-Five Gallery in New York. In 1957 he exhibited in solo exhibitions at the Galleria del Naviglio in Milan, at the Selecta Art Gallery in Rome, and at the "La Cittadella" Gallery in Ascona (Switzerland); again in 1957 he participated in the exhibition “Between Space and Earth” at the Marlborough Gallery in London. In 1958 a room was dedicated to him at the Venice Biennale, and in 1959 he was awarded the Prize of the Municipality of Venice at the Third Biennial of Contemporary Italian Engraving. In 1961 he exhibited at the Drian Gallery in London and participated in the exhibition “Neue italienische kunst”, at Galerie 59 in Aschaffenburg; the following year he exhibited at the Frank Perls Gallery in Beverly Hills. In 1972 he created some lithographs for Guido Ballo's poem Il ciè-lo Kàinos. The artist died in Venice on 16 October 1978.
