Ludolf Bakhuizen (1630-1708) was a Dutch painter of German origins, best known for his paintings of maritime subjects.
In 1650 Bakhuizen moved to Amsterdam to work as a merchant's clerk and a calligrapher, but soon abandoned the business to devote himself to art. He studied with important masters of the time such as Allart van Everdingen and Hendrik Dubbels, becoming known for his marine paintings, often featuring rough seas.
Bakhuizen was an avid student of nature and often ventured out to sea on a boat to study storms up close.
Bakhuizen was also a valuable engraver.
During his life, he came into contact with important personalities of the time, such as Cosimo III de' Medici and Peter the Great, and worked for various German princes.
