Renato Balsamo was born in Naples in 1937 to parents from Sorrento. He began his artistic studies in 1953 at the State Art Institute of Sorrento and since 1954 he has participated in national and international exhibitions. Having moved to Turin in 1957, he continued his studies here and enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, before moving on to the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples where he graduated in 1961. He stayed for an intense period of research and study in Spain before moving to Cortina d'Ampezzo to begin teaching at the local State Institute of Art and where he held the position of director of the museum named after the collector Mario Rimoldi for almost forty years. Influenced by De Chirico and Boecklin, Paolucci and Chiarrocchi, Balsamo has exhibited his works in the most prestigious Italian galleries.
