Schelte Adams Bolswert was a painter and engraver from the Netherlands, born around 1586 in Bolsward, Friesland, and died in December 1659 in Antwerp.
After working with his brother, also an engraver in Amsterdam and Haarlem, Schelte settled in Antwerp where he met the painter Rubens.
His early work was inspired by works by Jacob Jordaens and Theodor Rombouts, while his more mature output was clearly influenced by the style of Rubens. After the death of his brother Boetius in 1633, Schelte was hired by Rubens in his place and worked in close collaboration with the painter, who sometimes retouched his engravings.

Schelte Adams Balswert Biography

Schelte Adams Bolswert was a painter and engraver from the Netherlands, born around 1586 in Bolsward, Friesland, and died in December 1659 in Antwerp.
After working with his brother, also an engraver in Amsterdam and Haarlem, Schelte settled in Antwerp where he met the painter Rubens.
His early work was inspired by works by Jacob Jordaens and Theodor Rombouts, while his more mature output was clearly influenced by the style of Rubens. After the death of his brother Boetius in 1633, Schelte was hired by Rubens in his place and worked in close collaboration with the painter, who sometimes retouched his engravings.
After Rubens' death in 1640, Schelte continued to engrave the master's works following his graphic style. Thanks to his work, Rubens' landscapes became very popular and influenced the landscaping of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
