Samuel John Barnes was an English painter known for his landscape paintings of the Scottish highlands. He was born in Birmingham in 1847 and studied at the Birmingham School of Art before moving to London to continue his education. Barnes exhibited his works from 1882 to 1897, including two paintings at the Royal Academy in 1884, five at the Royal Scottish Academy, ten at the Royal Society of Artists, two at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, two at the Manchester City Art Gallery and several pieces at the Royal Hibernian Academy. His most popular paintings were those of the landscapes of the Scottish highlands, in which he often depicted cattle and red deer. He often painted in the vicinity of Royal Deesside (Balmoral Castle), where his works were highly regarded by Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra. Samuel John Barnes died in 1901 at just 54 years old.
