Antonio Basoli Biography

Antonio Basoli (1774-1884) was a very versatile Italian ornamentalist, set designer and decorator.
He attended the Clementina Academy in Bologna and trained under the guidance of the Gandolfis and the last followers of the Bibienesque movement. During his life, Basoli formed a deep friendship with Pelagio Palagi and Count Ulisse Aldrovandi, painter, patron and passionate art collector. Most of his artistic activity took place in Bologna, where he began teaching at the National Academy from 1803.
Thanks to his creativity, Basoli was able to integrate the Bolognese scenographic traditions with new trends, such as the neoclassical style and romantic landscape painting.
His scenographic production, documented in the collection of librettos of the Marucelliana Library in Florence from the years 1808-1820, was very vast, as demonstrated by his numerous sketches preserved mostly in Bologna, Milan and Florence. He also published numerous works in Bologna, many of which with a clear didactic intent. Most of the realization of his projects, however, was entrusted to the brothers Luigi and Francesco and other engravers from his school.
