Sigfrido Martin Begue Biography

Sigfrido Martín Begué (1959 - 2011) was a Spanish architect, painter and designer. From a very young age he was interested in painting, although he graduated in Architecture in 1985 and three years later obtained a scholarship from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. His work develops within figuration and references to architecture, classical mythology and metaphysics abound. With all this he creates imaginary landscapes, with a surreal and dreamlike atmosphere, which he populates with fantastic characters. As he himself states, his practice is somewhat illusionistic and deceptive. In the words of Francisco Rivas his work is characterized "by classicism in forms and modernity in contents". To his activity as a painter is added that of a designer in exhibitions, such as the one held in 1987 on the occasion of the centenary of Le Corbusier at the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and that of a set designer, among whose projects the following stand out: the sets for La Vida es Sueño (1982) for the Teatro Español in collaboration with Eduardo Arroyo, the sets and costumes for the ballet Coppelia (1992) for the Teatro dell'Opera di Firenze and the opera El Barbero de Sevilla (1993) for the Teatro Verdi of the same city. Among his exhibitions: "X Salón de los 16" (1990) at the old MEAC in Madrid and "Surrealism in exile" (1999) and "Heterotopias" (2000), both at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia.
