Hans Sebald Beham (1500 - 1500) was a German painter and engraver, one of the protagonists of the "Little Masters" movement, who moved to Frankfurt after an initial period spent in Nuremberg.
The artist is known for having created around 250 engravings, 18 etchings and 1500 woodcuts, and for having addressed various themes in his graphic works, including scenes of peasant life, mythological or historical.
He worked extensively on detailed and minute engravings, portraying a wide range of subjects, but is particularly known for scenes of peasant life and scenes from classical mythology or history.
His more mature works boldly interpret many of Dürer's most famous prints, such as his "Melancholia" of 1539, exploiting the difference in scale between his work and the original.
Beham is best known as a prolific printmaker, but he also made paintings, designed stained glass windows and wrote two best-selling picture books.
