S. Bellenger Biography

Sylvain Bellenger, now Director General of the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte since November 2015, previously worked in the United States at the Art Institute of Chicago (2012-2015) as Searle Chair and Curator of the Department of European Painting and Sculpture from the Middle Ages to twentieth century. Born in Normandy, his education in Philosophy and History of Art is linked to the University of Caen, that of Nanterre and the prestigious Universities of la Sorbonne and L'Ecole du Louvre in Paris. He was a fellow at Yale University, a Kress Fellow at CASVA (Center of Advanced Studies in Visual Arts) National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, and a Curatorial Getty Fellow at the Getty Research Center in Los Angeles. Bellenger also directed in France the Musée Girodet in Montargis from 1987 to 1991, the Castle and museums of Blois from 1992 to 1999. He worked at the Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art (INHA) in Paris from 2005 to 2010 as a of Conservateur en Chef du Patrimoine, he also directed as Chair and Curator the Department of European and American Paintings and Sculpture of the Cleveland Museum of Art from 1999 to 2005. A nineteenth-century specialist, he was curator of numerous exhibitions in Europe and the United States .
