F. Bellonzi Biography

Fortunato Bellonzi (1907 - 1993) was an Italian writer, art critic and essayist. He graduated in Modern Literature at the University of Pisa in 1929. From the 1930s he dedicated himself to painting and exhibited in regional trade union exhibitions and in two futurist exhibitions in Florence. He moved to Rome where he continued his activity as an artist until 1942. He collaborated with various newspapers including "La Voce Repubblicana", "Il Popolo di Roma" and "Il Tempo". He was an extraordinary character for his breadth of interests. From 1951 to 1983 he was appointed general secretary of the Rome Quadrennial, a position he held until 1983. Under his direction, five Quadrennials (from the sixth to the ninth) and more than one hundred international exhibitions of Italian art were organized. He was the one who promoted the "Quaderni della Quadriennale" and the "Archives of contemporary art" (Futurism, Divisionism, Liberty). Professor and expert scholar of Italian art, he has published numerous essays on the art of this period, including "Architecture, painting, sculpture from Neoclassicism to Liberty" (1978 and 1987). We owe him the rediscovery and valorization of important artists such as Previati, Sartorio, De Carolis, Bistolfi. He was a member of the committees for Dante's and Michelangelo's celebrations. During his career he was awarded prestigious roles and honours: in 1964 he obtained the gold medal reserved for cultural merits from the President of the Republic. He received a state annuity for cultural merit. He died in Rome in 1993.
