Born in 1933 in Ljubljana. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, where he graduated in 1955. He specialized in painting and then in graphics. In 1959 he received a scholarship from the French government for academic training in John Friedlaender's studio in Paris. In 1970 he began teaching drawing and painting at the Slovenian Academy of Fine Arts, where he held the position until 1996. A versatile poet and artist, he holds numerous solo exhibitions in Slovenia, Berlin, Milan, Rome, Paris and New York. He participates several times in the Venice Biennale and in many group exhibitions. He obtained numerous national and international awards including the Prešeren Prize for painting and graphics (1963 and 1981) and the Jakopic Prize for painting (1971). His works are part of the collections of important museums around the world. In 1989 he became a member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Ljubljana. he has been an Academician of San Luca since 1992. On 15 July 2016 he died in Prebold (Slovenia).
