Hans Best was a German painter of landscapes and genre scenes and also worked in illustration and sculpture.

Hans Best was a German painter of landscapes and genre scenes and also worked in illustration and sculpture.
Born on August 25, 1874 in Mannheim, he was the son of a carpenter. In 1894 he enrolled at the Academie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, in the class of Karl Raupp. He then studied with Wilhelm von Diez.
After completing his studies, Best traveled to Italy and spent a year in Trieste. Subsequently, he opened an atelier in Munich where he also held the role of graphics teacher at the Königliche Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich.
His genre scenes often depicted rural Bavarian life, often in a humorous way. Many of his paintings, frequently used as motifs for postcards, have been widely disseminated.
He created a series of illustrations for the tables of Ernst Wasmuth Verlag. As a sculptor, he worked mainly with animal portraits.
In 1913 he created the decoration of the ceiling frescoes in Auerbachs Keller in Leipzig.
Hans Best participated in the major German art exhibitions from 1937 until his death on March 3, 1942.
