Silvio Bicchi Biography

Silvio Bicchi was an Italian painter born in Livorno on 29 November 1874 and died in Florence on 1 December 1948. He began his artistic career at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he studied under the guidance of Giovanni Fattori, thus learning the technique of divisionism. He became known thanks to a series of illustrations of the Divine Comedy. He moved first to Paris and then to London, where he had the opportunity to observe the work of the great English portraitists, who greatly influenced his style. In 1893 he found himself in America where he created the doors of the Boston Library, acquiring international fame.
Returning to Italy, Bicchi continued to paint mainly popular genre subjects and mainly used the tempera and pastel technique. He participated in two editions of the International Art Exhibition of Venice, in 1914 and 1920. During the two-year period 1927-1928, he was artistic director of the Ceramiche Milani.
Among Bicchi's best-known works are the frescoes in the Library of the Villa Magni-Rizzoli in Canzo, created using the fresco technique.
Silvio Bicchi died in Florence on 1 December 1948.
