Jacques Biny Biography

Jacques Biny, born 10 July 1913 in Valencia, France, was a French industrial and interior designer of the 1930s. After graduating from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Jacques Biny decided to settle in Valencia, his hometown, to pursue the profession of decorator. He subsequently decided to dedicate himself to the field of interior design, as he found himself faced with the lack of practical lighting solutions for modern homes. He began designing lamps for his clients, which would later be produced by the plastering company Decoration Architecturale. In 1950, after having achieved success in this new experience, Jacques Biny decided to return to Paris, where, five years later, he founded his modern lighting production laboratory, Luminalite. Since then, he actively participated in all major national fairs and over the course of thirty years managed to create almost 400 models at his factory on rue de la Folie Regnault. Biny had a modern and pioneering vision, and developed a range of sophisticated "rational lighting fixtures" for domestic use, using cutting-edge materials such as micro-perforated sheet metal and Plexiglas. In the 1960s, Jacques Biny received numerous orders for light installations in large projects, including the prestigious cinema of Valence, Le Palace, the halls of the Cité universitaire of Antony and Nanterre, the prefecture of Valence and the Chantiers of the Atlantic of Saint Nazireo . Unfortunately, Jacques Biny died suddenly in 1976, while the Luminalite company was in full swing.
