Tom Birkner (1966 - ) is a New Jersey-born artist who focused on the world around him: working-class suburbs and the sprawl of postindustrial America. Birkner received his BA from Rutgers University and his MFA from Pennsylvania State University. He is a two-time recipient of the New Jersey State Council on The Arts Fellowship and his work has recently been exhibited at the El Paso Museum of Art, El Paso, Texas and Centro Cultural de las Fronteras, Juárez, Mexico. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally and has received reviews in the New York Times and ARTnews. Birkner's practice began early, as he closely observed football games, shopping mall excursions, amusement park visits, and other diversions of daily suburban life. Birkner is less interested in social and cultural interpretation than in representing the vitality of memory, nostalgia and perception.
