Giuseppe Bisi, son of the Genoese painter and sculptor Tommaso Bisi (Genoa 1758 - Milan 1826), was a skilled landscape artist. During the Napoleonic campaigns, he served as a volunteer and was later a member of the chancellery of Viceroy Eugene of Beauharnais. Later, he taught for a short period at the royal girls' college in Milan. After the fall of the Italian Kingdom, Bisi became one of the most renowned landscape painters of his time and participated in the Brera exhibitions of 1833, 1835 and 1837. In 1838 he obtained the recently established chair of landscape at the Brera Academy in Milan.
Bisi's painting is characterized by realism and naturalism, particularly through the use of broad views (often executed from an elevated point of view) which aim to faithfully depict the naturalistic aspects of everyday life. His most successful works evoke strongly romantic atmospheres.
