Abraham Bloemaert Biography

Abraham Bloemaert was a Dutch painter, draftsman and engraver born in Dordrecht on 25 December 1564 and died in Utrecht on 27 January 1651. Son of a well-known architect and sculptor, Bloemaert studied in Utrecht in 1575 and then spent a short period of study self-taught on the Antwerp Mannerists. He moved to Paris to refine his style under the guidance of various masters, becoming one of the greatest exponents of Dutch Mannerism. Eclectic also from the point of view of the subjects, he ranges between mythological, biblical, historical and allegorical themes, with ease.
After 1600 Abraham Bloemaert incorporated ideas from Italy into his style, developing a decorative synthesis between the contrasts of light of Caravaggio and the bright acid colors of Mannerism.
Bloemaert executed over 1,500 drawings, conceived for tapestries and stained glass, depicting mythological and religious subjects, applications that were entirely new to Dutch art. Abraham Bloemaert died in Utrecht on 27 January 1651.
