Karl Blossfeldt was a famous photographer known primarily for his photographs of flowers and living organisms. However, he began his career as a sculptor, attending the Mägdesprung foundries and the Institute of the Royal Arts Museum in Berlin from 1884 to 1890.
Despite having no photographic training, Blossfeldt produced many of his photographs using a camera modified to capture plant surfaces with extreme clarity. His images became famous thanks to the support of the gallery owner Karl Nierendorf, who organized a personal exhibition of the photographer in 1926 and published the first monograph “Primary Forms of Art” in 1928. Following the great success of the first publication , followed a second titled “The Magic Garden of Nature,” in 1932. The clarity, precision and apparent lack of manipulation of his images, combined with their presentation as analogues of essential forms in art and architecture , ensured that his work was appreciated by supporters of New Vision photography.
