Heinrich Bodmer (1814-1901), Swiss painter, lithographer and copper engraver, was born and died in Zurich. Growing up in difficult economic conditions, he had to work in a factory to earn a living until he was 23. Subsequently, he was fortunate enough to study art with successful artists and managed to support himself by creating chalk and oil portraits. He also produced many landscape etchings for Zurich publishers and scientific publications. Numerous chalk and oil portraits and lithographs have been attributed to him. Bodmer traveled only once to Munich in 1868 and spent his life in Zurich. His works can be found in private collections, in the collection of the Zurich Art Society (Kunsthaus Zürich) and in the copper engraving collection of the Zurich Polytechnic Institute.
