Luigi Boni Biography

Luigi Boni was born in 1904 in Cerbaiola. He studied in Livorno and, as soon as he had the opportunity, he moved to Alexandria, Egypt, where he opened a bar with an espresso machine. He began to delve into the art of caricature and, following his profession as a caricaturist, he began to travel, participating in various international fairs and exhibitions in the United States, Canada and Japan. He subsequently moved to Paris where he lived on the Boulevard Serurier around the first half of the 1930s. Here he began to paint in the most vibrant center of European painting. In 1954 he returned to Empoli and came into contact with the Empoli painter Piero Gambassi. Together they founded the "Circolo Amatori Arti Figurative" Association, which is still based today in Palazzo Ghibellino. Luigi Boni's painting has gone through various creative moments, approaching various lines of research from informal to Optical Art. He participated in the international exhibition in Basel in 1976 together with the artists of the Aglaia Gallery in Florence and the following year Vittorio Grotti organized a large exhibition at the Viani Foundation. Luigi Boni died on 31 August 1977 in Castelfiorentino hospital. His painting has evolved over time, characterized by the progressive lightening of complexity, from the almost baroque experiments with colour, up to the silence of the black surface of his latest works.
