Luigi Bonifacio (1912-1988) was born in Riesi in Sicily where he spent his early youth. He graduated in History and Philosophy at the Magisterium of Messina. Participates in the African War and the Second World War. He was seriously wounded in the battle of Bardia-El Alamein in 1941. Partially blind, he spent some years in an English concentration camp in Australia. Here his poetic vein matured. He then returns to Milan where he lives shaping his life as a man and as a poet in the memory of his legendary Sicily. This memory constitutes the common denominator of a broader artistic production which has been expressed in the most diverse forms from painting on canvas and glass to sculpture in gold and iron. An unmistakable actor of cultural life in post-war Milan, those who knew him remember his vast literary, historical and archaeological culture, his biting criticism, his dense and enigmatic personality always tormented by the contradiction between his poetry and the real world.
