Jan Both Biography

Jan Both (c. 1615 - 1652) was the leading pioneer of the Italianate landscape in 17th-century Holland.
Jan Both was born in Utrecht, the son of a stained glass painter and an engraver and probably trained under the guidance of Abraham Bloemaert together with his brother Andries Both, with whom he reached Italy and Rome via France.
In 1639 Jan collaborated with Herman van Swanevelt and Claude Lorrain on a design for the Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid. Certainly by 1646 Jan had returned to Utrecht, where he further refined his vast imaginary landscapes imbued with a golden Mediterranean light.
The touches of realism of the earthly figures and detailed vegetation provide a counterbalance to the golden atmosphere and idyllic skies often portrayed at sunrise or sunset. Sometimes Both populates his landscapes with religious or mythological figures as in “The Judgment of Paris” (London, National Gallery).
His landscapes, with the subject Rome and Tivoli and more generally the Roman countryside, were much appreciated by the Dutch patricians, who preferred them to the native Dutch landscapes in the style of Van Goyen.
