Giuseppe Bottani (Cremona, 1717 – Mantua, 1784) was an Italian painter. Educated in Florence in the workshop of Antonio Puglieschi and Vincenzo Meucci, Bottani arrived in Rome in 1735, where he completed his training with Agostino Masucci; in 1758 he was welcomed to the Accademia di San Luca. In these years he painted a series of portraits (Self-portrait; Portrait of Luigi Valadier's wife) and altarpieces (one for Sant'Andrea delle Fratte, one for Milan today in Brera, several for Pontremoli) adhering to the first ferments of the nascent neoclassicism but without forgetting the dictates of classicist painting of the 17th century, in particular of Carlo Maratta. In 1769, by will of Maria Teresa of Austria he was appointed painting teacher and director of the newly founded Academy of Mantua, the city where he concluded his career and lived the last fifteen years of his life.
