Vittorio Botticini Biography

Vittorio Botticini (1909-1978) was a painter of Brescian origin. Right between Brescia and Fiumicello he was educated by Annibale Scaroni. He enrolled at the Cignaroli Academy during his military service, which ended in Verona, and Angelo Dall'Oca Bianca was one of his teachers there. While still working as a laborer in Brescia, he continued to dedicate himself to painting by enrolling at the Brera Academy. He was deeply affected by his time at war. His artistic adventure was strongly inflected in the direction of comparison and personal reinterpretation of the most significant ferments that crossed the Italian twentieth century. Botticini was strongly linked to his territory and therefore to the lessons of the great Brescian and Venetian masters, but he was also able to redeem himself from the risk of a provincial dimension through openness towards everything that came from outside, starting with the examples of the international avant-gardes, arriving at a singular fusion of Cézannian and Picassian echoes resolved in an intense lyrical post-cubism. From the beginning, his lively intellectual curiosity took the form of an incessant search for content and style, driven to indulge an expressive impetus that never wanted to concede anything to convention, nor bend to the rules of an environment often inclined to cultural conservatism.
