Herbert Brandl Biography

Herbert Brandl is one of the best-known contemporary Austrian artists and is considered a supporter of the “New Wild” movement.
Brandl was born in Graz in 1959. He attended the University of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he studied with Herbert Tasquil and Peter Weibel. He currently lives and works in Vienna, where in addition to his artistic work he has been a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy since 2004.
Brandl became famous thanks to major exhibitions starting in the 1980s. He presented his works at the Paris Biennale in 1985, at the Documenta IX in Kassel in 1990 and at the Kunsthalle in Basel in 1992. He represented Austria at the Venice Biennale in 2007. In 2011, the Albertina in Vienna dedicated a exhibition entitled 'Herbert Brandl. Mountains and landscapes. Monotypes 2009-2010".
Brandl's work, especially since 2000, documents his fascination with the landscape and monumentality of the mountain world, highlighting a completely new interpretation of motifs otherwise fallen into kitsch: Brandl uses a variety of formats and techniques to capture the motif of the mountain, playing with expressive gestures, spaces of color and geometries that dismantle the familiar world around us.
