Antonio Bresciani Biography

Antonio Bresciani (1902 - 1998) He attended the Art Institute of Naples and subsequently the Academy of Fine Arts where he graduated in 1925 under the guidance of Vincenzo Volpe. His exhibition journey began in 1924 with the presentation of the painting “The Emigrant” at the Art School of New York, where he won the prize for the student category; in 1925 he took part in a group show at the Galleria Corona in Naples presenting "Portrait of my mother". In 1927 he was present at the Southern Art Exhibition in Rome in the rooms of the Casina Valadier. He is part of the Ostinati group and joins the group Ciardo, Lalli, Rispoli, Priscindaro, Buonoconto, Mercadante, Uva and Striccoli who in an attic in Via Cesare Rossaroll in Naples gave life to the Quartene Latino. In 1930 he was at the Venice Biennale with “Mezza figura” and “Napoletana”. In 1932 he held his first solo exhibition at the Giosi gallery. From 1942 he occupied the chair of the free school of nude art at the BB.AA Academy. of Naples. Bresciani's painting has been compared to that of A. Spadini and Degas; the female figure remains among his favorite themes even if, starting from the 1950s, his pictorial research was enriched with a new element: the mannequin. Still lifes also play an important role in his production. After taking part in the main national exhibitions, at the age of seventy he will participate in the initiatives of a few Neapolitan galleries. He will continue to work in his city until he is ninety despite age-related vision problems.
