Jan Brueghel was born in Brussels in 1568, as the second son of the renowned painter Pieter Brueghel. His talent earned him Brueghel's nicknames of velvets, flowers and paradise thanks to his subject preferences which ranged from still life, often composed of flowers, to landscape. Jan Brueghel was born in Brussels in 1568, as the second son of the renowned painter Pieter Brueghel. His talent earned him Brueghel's nicknames of velvets, flowers and paradise thanks to his subject preferences which ranged from still life, often composed of flowers, to landscape. At the age of 21, Jan left the family home to embark on a long journey through Europe. Between 1590 and 1596, Brueghel was in Italy and worked for Cardinal Federico Borromeo in Milan. From 1606 to 1610 he became court painter in Brussels. He later traveled to Holland with van Balen and Rubens, and made some paintings for Archduke Albrecht of Austria and the King of Poland.
Jan Brueghel died of cholera in Antwerp in 1625.
